Whether it is a fan just starting out with a small collection, to some of the largest collections in the world, there is always something you can learn from looking at other’s collections. Today’s focus is on the collection of Chaz George. If you are familiar with Chaz, he has been featured in Toy Shop magazine, Antique Toy World magazine, Cool & Collected magazine, The Kovels newsletter, Heritage Auction books, Serious Toyz catalogs, local newspapers and more. Chaz was the main contributor to the ’66 Batman Exhibit at The Hollywood Museum honoring Adam West as well.
His collection consists of many ‘Holy Grail’ pieces such as Batman’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27, many early Golden Age Key Batman Comics, the rare 1966 Ideal Batman Utility Belt and the Prototype Set. He also possess the most pristine mint example of the most desirable and difficult to find complete super hero toy of all time… the 1966 Ideal Justice League of America/Batman Play Set.

DCCollectors: How did you get into collecting DC toys and what was your first DC toy/collectible?
Chaz George: Ever since I could remember I had a great love for Batman.
I believe my first DC toy was the 1970s Mego 8″ Batman action figure. I went through them like clothes throughout that decade.
DCCollectors: How many pieces are in your collection?
Chaz George: I haven’t counted in five years, but I know it’s in the thousands. However, I’m a fan of quality over quantity.
DCCollectors: If you could only choose one item to keep, which one would it be?
Chaz George: That’s a tough question, but I would have to say my 1966 Ideal Factory Prototype Test Shot Batman Utility Belt Set.
DCCollectors: What is the one item that you really want to add to your collection?
Chaz George: I would like to own a custom built Batmobile of my own design.
DCCollectors: What piece of advice do you have for those just starting their collections?
Chaz George: Take your time when building a collection, especially with a massive subject as Batman, it can grow out of hand real fast. Be particular unless you aim to be a completest.
DCCollectors: Do you have an interesting story regarding the collection, such as meeting someone famous while shopping for your toys, or a super deal you got on something? Something along those lines.
Chaz George: Back in 1999 at a toy show in New Jersey, I introduced Yvonne Craig to my youngest daughter Bat Girl who’s now 19. Frank Gorshin was there as well and I had picked up the 1976 Sears Pines Of America Batmobile Pedal Car which I wanted as a small boy, but no one bought it for me and Gorshin said “You actually bought that thing?”
One of the best deals I ever got was definitely finding the 1966 Ideal Justice League of America & Batman Play Set totally complete, all original in pristine mint condition for just $600. The reason it was frozen in time is because the original owner was a spoiled kid who never played with it, so it sat for years covered up. The Batplane Launcher had the original rubber band attached to it and it still had the elasticity because it was stored in the right temperatures. Incredible but true.
